The QUT Virtual Desktop Structure (VDI) service allows academics to use specialized software from home, without having to install the software on their specific computers, and without ever piercing a virtual desktop.

To penetrate QUT’s VDI(VMware Horizon) off-lot, QUT VPN( Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility customer) will first need to be installed and connected. The following instructions should work for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Installing QUT VPN

Go to https://remote.qut.edu.au

Enter your QUT username and password.

Click the blue button to download the installer.

Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts to install QUT VPN.

Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

Enter sas.qut.edu.au and click Connect.

Enter your QUT username and password when prompted.

You should now be connected to QUT VPN.

Installing QUT’s VDI

Go to https://customerconnect.vmware.com/downloads/#all_products and select VMware Horizon Client

Click Go to Downloads next to VMware Horizon Client for your operating system.

Make sure Select Version is set to the highest number and click Download Now.

Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts to install VMware Horizon Client on your computer.

Open the VMware Horizon Client.

Double-click Add Server, add vdi.qut.edu.au, and click Connect.

Enter your QUT username and password when prompted.

Double-click the virtual desktop you want to access.

Each computer will have a different selection of software, so choose the one you own. Flashback to familiarize yourself with QUT Virtual IT policy and treat your virtual desktop as you would any other computer on QUT’s lot.
